Xinara House, a beautifully converted former bishop's palace in the heart of unsung Tinos

Picture the scene: a bowl of just-plucked figs still warm from the sun; shadows dappling across ancient stone tracery, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and that inevitable holiday dilemma - which of the beautiful terrace gardens to choose for a lazy snooze in the sun?  Welcome to Xinara House, former bishop's palace in the heart of unsung Tinos, where contemporary art by Rachel Whiteread, Gilbert & George and others mixed with collectable textiles, lights and furniture.

Xinara House is a beautifully converted classic Cyclades stone-built house from the 17th-18th centuries. In the 1800s it was the home of Cyclades Bishop Ioannes Kollaros (the house bears his coat of arms). There are ancient decorative marble fanlights and plasterwork.Tinos has local marble with exceptional skilled workers who made new floors, tables and even solid-marble basins for the bathrooms and kitchen. Traditional island pebble-patterns are laid on terrace. The exterior is painted with natural limewash to which is added 'loulaki' (old-fashioned laundry blue) in time-honoured fashion. Outside are old mulberries (silk was produced at the house), walnuts, almonds and fruit trees. Our older vines are an ancient and unique variety.
